The Trenholm Library has books, eBooks, online journals, and databases to aid in your studies.

Health Related Resources can be found through the Trenholm Databases.

Students who need additional assistance can request one-on-one research assistance from the Reference/Information Library at the Trenholm Campus Library.

This guide will provide specific database information as well as common APA guidelines for research and writing.

PrepSTEP offers a variety of resources to help nursing students prepare for the NCLEX Exam.

Once you have accessed PrepSTEP, complete the Registration to setup your own personal account.  Once your registration is complete, you will have access to Nursing Practice Exams, eBooks, and Flashcards.

 

APA 7th Edition Formatting

General Formatting Guidelines:

Students should follow the 7th Edition Publication of the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines when writing academic papers. 

Perdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) is a great resources to aid in citing different materials and understanding general layout and citation requirements.  

APA Style, is also a great resource for guidelines and example layouts using APA format.

General Formatting Guidelines

  • Font: Use a readable font like 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, and 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode as well as serif fonts such as 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, 10-point Computer Modern.
  • Margins: 1-inch margins on all sides.
  • Line Spacing: Double-space all text, including references.
  • Indentation: Indent the first line of every paragraph 0.5 inches.
  • Page Numbers: Include page numbers in the top right corner.
  • Title Page: Include the title, author's name, institutional affiliation, course number and name, instructor's name, and due date.

Headings

APA 7th edition uses five levels of headings. Here's how to format them:

  1. Level 1: Centered, Bold, Title Case
    • Text begins as a new paragraph.
  2. Level 2: Flush Left, Bold, Title Case
    • Text begins as a new paragraph.
  3. Level 3: Flush Left, Bold Italic, Title Case
    • Text begins as a new paragraph.
  4. Level 4: Indented, Bold, Title Case, Period.
    • Text begins on the same line and continues as a regular paragraph.
  5. Level 5: Indented, Bold Italic, Title Case, Period.
    • Text begins on the same line and continues as a regular paragraph.

In-Text Citations

  • Paraphrasing: (Author, Year)
    • Example: (Smith, 2020)
  • Direct Quotes: (Author, Year, p. Page Number)
    • Example: (Smith, 2020, p. 15)

Accessing Databases Off Campus

Off-Campus Access

Many library resources are accessible online 24/7. Some library content can only be accessed from home after being authenticated as a student. 

If you are trying to access a library database or ebooks, you will be prompted to login before gaining access. 

Below is an example of the login screen you should see.  

Your username is your Trenholm State student email and your password is your email password.

Example:

Username: A0999999@alabama.edu

Password: Trenholm student email password
